Some Popular Cocktails to Put in Your Smoker

Cocktail smokers add a rich, aromatic dimension to drinks by infusing them with rich wood smoke (like oak, hickory, applewood, or cherry). The key to choosing the right cocktail is picking drinks that either have enough backbone to handle bold smoke or naturally complement sweet and woody flavors.
Here are the best classic cocktails and flavor profiles to run through a cocktail smoker:

1. Whiskey & Bourbon Classics

Dark spirits are the absolute gold standard for smoking. The natural charred-barrel aging of bourbon and rye harmonizes instantly with wood smoke.

  • Smoked Old Fashioned: The ultimate classic for a reason. Smoked oak, hickory, or cherrywood elevates the bourbon, sugar, and Angostura bitters into something truly top-tier.
  • Smoked Manhattan: Sweet vermouth, rye whiskey, and aromatic bitters gain incredible depth when smoked with applewood or pecan wood.
  • Smoked Boulevardier: Equal parts bourbon, Campari, and sweet vermouth. The smoke softens the sharp bitterness of Campari and brings out the warm oak notes of the whiskey.
  • Smoked Paper Plane: Bourbon, Amaro Nonino, Aperol, and fresh lemon juice. Smoke adds an earthy layer that grounds the bright citrus and herbal notes.

2. Agave Spirits (Tequila & Mezcal)

Agave spirits love smoke. Mezcal already has an earthy, smoky quality from cooked agave pits, while tequila gains an intriguing, subtle depth when smoked.

  • Smoked Smoked Margarita (or "Double Smoked"): Smoke a classic reposado or añejo Margarita with applewood or hickory. The sweet lime juice cuts right through the savory smoke.
  • Smoked Oaxaca Old Fashioned: A mix of reposado tequila, mezcal, agave nectar, and Angostura bitters. Smoking this accentuates the natural smokiness of the mezcal while warming up the tequila.
  • Smoked Paloma: Tequila, grapefruit juice, fresh lime, and agave. Smoking the glass or the batch adds a savory edge to the tart citrus.

3. Aged Rum & Bitter Spirits

Rums—especially dark, aged, or spiced varieties—have rich molasses, caramel, and vanilla notes that pair beautifully with fruity or nutty woods.

  • Smoked Dark & Stormy: Dark rum, fresh lime juice, and spicy ginger beer. A quick smoke with cherrywood adds a roasted spice finish that contrasts great with the ginger.
  • Smoked Rum Fashioned: Aged rum, rich simple syrup, and orange bitters. Smoked with pecan or maple wood, this delivers deep butterscotch and toasted vanilla flavors.
  • Smoked Negroni: Equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. While gin isn't always the first choice for smoking, the botanical botanicals and bitter Campari turn complex and rich under mild fruitwood smoke.

Pro-Tip for Best Results:
Smoke cold liquid/ice: Smoke clings much better to chill surfaces and liquids. Build your drink over ice first, then top it with your smoker lid.

Don't over-smoke: A 10 to 20-second dwell time inside the glass or smoking cloche is usually plenty. Over-smoking can leave a harsh, acrid, or ash-tray-like aftertaste rather than a smooth wood flavor.
